after doing some research, seems like a number of people on the forum use these no stopper/airlock methods. these would work as long as i did not have a vigorous fermentation that i ended up needing a blowoff tube for. is there any way to reduce my chances of needing a blowoff tube? im using 6 gallon BBs for 5 gallon batches. after 2 batches, i haven't been close to needing a blowoff tube.

I like to see if the airlock has dried out due to suck back or evaporation.

What about drilling a hole in the neck of the BB. Insert a gromet and a blowoff tube and your done.

You could also reseal it with a small bung when you don't need to lager.

Alot of factors go into how active your fermentation will be, and I would never think you won't need a blowoff. Better safe than sorry.

I would not drill or cut the better bottle. These would probably fit without modification, and you could either find another use for the better bottles or sell them to recoup some costs.
