Default Conical fermenter rust?

I just purchased a new conical fermentor off of ebay and as I am cleaning it there appears to be a ring of rust appearing inside near where the top portion is joined to the conical portion. Has anyone ever experienced this, and what should I do about it? I have picutres, but they are just on my desktop, I dont know how to load them without a URL.

How is the top portion joined to the conical portion? In all of the designs I've seen, the hopper, which consists of a cylindrical section with a conical section below it, is a single continuous piece of stainless steel. LIke these at Toledo Metal Spinning.

If yours is two pieces welded together, then it is possible rust is due to a poor quality weld.

Before you do anything, you might email the ebay vendor and ask them about the issue. They may have encountered it before or they may let you return the unit.

If you don't want to contact the seller and you don't think the problem is serious, get some Bar Keeper's Friend and scrub the rust with that and a nylon scrub pad.

If someone scrubbed the weld with plain steel, it can leave iron behind on the weld. That will rust. You should scrub it with copper, brass, plastic but not steel wool, unless it's stainless steel wool. Scrub it good with bkf like biltzk said and see if the rust returns. Also If you use a brass/copper/etc brush or pad make sure you don't use one that's been used on plain steel.
