Broke my Crankandstein mill :-(
|
|
I was running several pounds of grain through my Crankandstein 2A mill when the grain stopped feeding. This happens once in a while when the grain doesn't get caught between the rollers and the drive roller just spins against the grain but this time was different. The drive shaft turns but the roller doesn't. I don't know how they attach the shaft but I actually thought it was turned down from the roller stock. In any case, I sent Don an email to see what he could do for me and he did respond rather quickly. He says he'll put a 1/2" shaft on it. I'll keep ya updated.

I'm assuming you had the 3/8" shaft... I have a 1/2" on my 3D and have had no problems with it. Sounds like Don is taking care of it though.

Yeah, I think I got the mill when I only had a 3/8" chuck so I didn't think to upgrade to 1/2". I had plans of redesigning my base and hopper anyway so this gives me an excuse to get it done.

There is probally a roll pin through the roller and shaft that has sheared off. Can you see any holes in the face of the roller? Should be a simple replacement with a new pin once you get the shaft hole lined up with the roller hole.
Kinda like this if you think of the flanged hub as the roller and the splined shaft as the driveshaft through the roller

The actual shaft definitely broke but I'm happy to report that Don replaced the broken parts and had it back to me quickly. I'm thrilled with the level of customer support I got.

Did you get a replacement 3/8 or did you get upgraded to 1/2?

I have a 1/2" C+S 3 roller mill and have milled many, many pounds of grain through it over the past 6 or so years that I owned it and haven't had any issues with it. I'm glad to hear that you still have fantastic customer support/service still. I would highly recommend a C+S to anyone.
