Bleaching Bottles

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know a good ratio for bleaching bottles before bottling? Apparently I ran out of my sanitizer powder and I'm bottling today.

Is bleaching a bad idea?

2-3 Tblspns bleach for 5 gallons is a pretty strong solution. Good for soaking krausen stains out of carboys, but probably overkill for general sanitizing. Bleach is a safe sanitizer at much lower concentrations than this.

I think Papazian's book lists 0.5 to 1.5 tsp in five gallons for 1 hour to 1/2 hour soak. The bottles have to be completely clean for this to be effective.

Like cwesten said, 2 Tbsp is great for removing hardened deposits and stubborn stains (requires overnite soak), but it's way overkill for general sanitizing.

I use bleach all the time for my plastic bottles and built my own bottle washer and rinse stand ,it does 12 -1 liter (2-pint)bottles at a time just make sure you rinse good

I second the darkie-drinkie. You gotta be careful or you'll get a batch tasting of bleach.

Ive got bottles i must have bleached 12 times. So far, they are still dark amber, so I guess it's safe....well, one Dos Equiss is green...
