BLC and Star San in keg lines
|
|
I have been keeping star san in my fluid lines when I'm not actively pulling pints on the assumption it would keep the lines from becoming funky. After about 6 weeks I've noticed the lines started turning a bit yellowish, as if there was beer in there that wasn't getting washed out. I ran some BLC through yesterday and it washed that mung right out. Whatever it was, star san doesn't remove it, but BLC does. So if you're like me and keep star san in your lines, run some BLC through once in a while to actually clean them. This public service announcement brought to you by *belch* beer.

I think I read somewhere that starsan will make the lines cloudy.

General rule: clean, THEN sanitize. StarSan will eat its way through some crud, but its main job is to kill bugs, not remove gunk.

A real easy way to clean your beer line is to use MLF fittings on your beer lines. That way you can take them off to clean and soak. In the mean time, screw on a Grey gas in connector. Then you take a 2 liter pop bottle and fill it 2/3 with BLC and put on a carbonator cap. squeeze the rest of the air out, then charge it with 20 # of CO2. Connect the grey gas line (now connected to your beer line), turn the bottle upside down, pull the tap and the BLC will start to flow.
Beats tying up a corny to do the same thing, plus it makes your clean your black beer out ball lock connectors.

I thought I saw this process somewhere... was it in a recent issue of BYO?

I just dump a gallon of blc into an empty keg and run it through that way. I don't have to disassemble anything doing that.

A gallon diluted, not concentrate.
