Default 20 gallon kettle

I am looking to move up to a 20 gallon kettle so I can start doing 10 gallon batches. I am really torn between the megapot and the blichmann. I'm convinced I don't need a sight glass on the kettle, but the width of the megapot worries me. Thoughts?

In the future, I plan to get a 15 gallon direct fired RIMS MT to replace my cooler.

Why does the width worry you?? I have both a 15gal Blichmann and 26 gal megapot... I like them both but for different reasons. If I were to do it all again I would probably stick with the megapots.

I have a 20g blichmann. I like the sight glass for measuring how much sparge runnings I still need, but besides that I find it completely useless, so I agree with your decision.

I'm sure everyone hates when I recommend our products but....

All kettles are taller than wide, have 2 couplers welded in and are the same construction as the Blichmanns you're looking at. If you haven't checked us out may be worth a look.

But you don't have a 20 gallon pot, right?

Is a 15 gallon pot big enough for a 10 gallon full boil? I'm looking to move up to 10 gallon batches, but might still do some 5 gallon batches here and there.

Spike--is the horizontal placement of the thermometer a problem with the heat from the burner?

Thanks!

I'm curious why you feel this way about sight glasses?
Not arguing, just wondering because I bought one from Bobby for my 19 gallon brew kettle. I have one of his sight glasses on a converted keggle that used to be my kettle, but now serves as my HLT. I really liked being able to see where my boil volume was at anytime I wanted.

Before I install the sight glass on my kettle, I was just wondering what your reasons were for not liking it on yours?

Sorry for the slight hijack, OP.

Wow, those are really nice and awesomely priced! My main is a 20g, and it feels like such a waste when I do 5g batches. My starter was a 7g and was regretted. Right now all I care about is size and ball valve, and yours look beautiful! I'm tempted to pull the trigger, but my god the wife would decapitate me this close to post christmas.

Keep a 10g aside for me until my tax refund comes back, will ya!

You can do a 10 gal batch in a 15 gal pot. i do it all the time. All it means is you have to manage your protein break, can't just walk away from it. I use my sight glass all the time.
