15gal from BK to Ferm w/o Electric Pump - Ideas?
|
|
So I'm looking for ideas... here's what I'd like to do:
I'd like to set up a 15 gallon 3-tier gravity system whereby the brew kettle would be roughly 12" off the ground.
I'd like to figure out a way to move the 15 gallons of wort from the brew kettle into the fermenter without having to lift/move the kettle itself (I'm too old and that's too heavy).
Lastly, I'd like to figure out a way to do this without an electric pump. Manual would be okay. From poking around here, it sounds like there may not be an easily sanitizable manual pump out there.
Anyway, looking for input on how I could make this happen. Thanks for the info!

Easiest option would be to have the burner 18" high, as that's the height of carboys. Not sure what type of fermenter you've got though.

I'm assuming you will be chilling in the BK, just start the transfer into the carboy, and when it stops flowing lift up the keg. most of the wort will be out of the keg and it should be easy to lift at that point.
Or dig a hole to put the carboy into

i had an idea up for discussion the other day utilizing a scissor lift. harbor freight has a 450 lb capacity transmission lift for like 80 bucks. take the casters off and weld a piece of plae on the top for a table top and there you go, it has a 25 in lift reach then you can use gravity once again.

i had the same thought... but i would think burner mounting would be an issue.

I always use a bucket as a measuring cup ! As it comes out of the chiller, catch a couple of gallons and walk them over to the fermenter.. No problem !

so you mean to just move the 15 gallons in a few bucket loads? that's certainly an option... especially since you're wanting to aerate at that point anyway.
what about a hand pump. something like this:
