The club was initially conceived in the mid 1980s as the Madison Sobriety Club during an inebriated discussion among a group of homebrewers that regularly got together to share their brews. Someone suggested marching in the upcoming Madison parade as the Madison Homebrewing Club, but that idea was quickly shot down due to the teetotaler attitude of Alabama.
