Pretty sweet Craigslist score

Happened to check Craigslist the other day, looking for beer gear. Found a guy not too far away selling a 15# CO2 tank and a dual-gauge regulator. So, I get talking to him, and find out he's got more stuff, too.
So, I'm getting the CO2 tank (which is out of date, but I can swap it and it's still half full), the reg, and four cornies in good shape for $165. Not the greatest deal in the world, but pretty good. The cornies would cost me $140 at the LHBS, maybe $100 - $120 if I bought them online (with shipping). The tank's bigger than my current one, it gives me a spare. Plus, I can use the smaller tank and the reg to start putting together a nice, pretty portable kegging station. I've committed to making the beer for a wedding next year, I'd like to have a nice system to show off (still thinking through the design).
So, I'm pretty stoked. Pick it all up on Friday.

****!
Thought I had scored a pump from this guy, too. He had a whole RIMS setup that he hadn't advertised but that I bought, mostly because it had a pump. BUT, get home, and I see that the pump (a Teel pump, not a March, but still a magnetic drive pump) is only rated to 180°, and there's no mention in the directions about whether it's rated for food-grade applications. So, I've just shot him an email back to see whether we can undo that part of the deal, I'm nervous about using this pump now and it certainly isn't worth as much $$ as I thought. Pissah! |

OK, so I no longer own a pump
![]() Real nice guy who I could unfortunately NOT convince to not quit the hobby. He's moving to San Antonio, trying to lighten the load before he goes. He does still make wine, he's going to continue with that. He had actually built a whole quasi-RIMS setup that I had bought with the pump, it had an electrical element that wort would flow past to be recirculated back to the mash. I was a little nervous about the heat stick, too; it looked to be 240V, and he had it wired (poorly) to a 120V outlet. That's a safety issue, isn't it? He also had the pump hooked up to a rheostat (sp?) to control the flow, rather than just using a ball value, I told him that my understanding was that cutting the power to slow the pump was likely to burn out the pump over time. In any case, he was kind enough to go back to the original deal. If anyone in the area's looking for a pump and heat stick - pump rated to 180° - let me know and I'll send you his email (it's not been Craigslisted yet). |
