Randallized

As my official first blog here on Homebrewtalk, I would like to say how thrilled I am about my new Randall.
For those who aren't "In the know", a Randall (or Randall the Enamel Animal as Dogfish Head Brewery so cleverly named it) is used for running kegged beer through fresh leaf hops, then into the glass. This makes for a very pungent, very fresh, very delicious hop flavor.
My love affair with the Randall started when I was in search of a huge hoppy beer for a friends birthday party. He is an official Hop Head and proud of it. The problem is that he's very picky about his IPA's. He doesn't like a noticeable malt flavor, he wants strictly hops. If I could brew a beer without grains, that's what I'd give him. Water and Hops.
Anyways... Upon scouring the internet I stumbled accross the Dogfish Head masterpiece. I instantly knew I had to make one of these. If not only for the shear joy of using 15 ounces of hops in a recipe, then at least to see the look on my everyones face when I pull out 3 ounces of fresh hops and stuff them in this bad boy. What transpired wasn't much what I expected.
For some, the Randall has but one use...Hops. For me, I've found all sorts of ways to use this magnificent creature.
My latest concoction with the Randall was with my Belgian Wit. Now, as opposed to my usual beers, I kept to style guidelines while creating this beer. After trying it, I was very pleased with the beer but I couldn't help thinking it needed something more. Randall was there to save the day. What came next was a little odd, but worked out great. I stuffed the Randall full of freshly cored pineapple. The pineapple added one helluva "zing" to the Belgian Wit. I really have no other way to describe it. Wit's are generally stuck with strictly oranges and corriander so the addition of pineapple to the mix upped the citrus by a ton. It was perfectly complimented by the wheat flavors and classic belgian yeast.
Other beers that will be Randallized:
Double IPA w/ Pineapple, Oranges, and Centennial Hop Leaves.
Double Chocolate Raspberry Stout w/ Fresh Cherries
American Wheat w/ Cascade Hop Leaves and Kiwi
Belgian Dubbel w/ Fresh Cut Grapes and Raisins.
So, in summary, the Randall isn't just for hop heads and other freaks. It has something to offer every beer, depending on the imagination of the user.
I will post pictures of the build process and usage asap. Also to come, my RIMS build project.

Ran across your blog while searching for a pineapple beer recipe, and this seems like the way to go! I had never thought of using a Randall for anything other than hops!
Thanks for opening my eyes. |
