How Many Watts do you need for my Boil Kettle or Hot Liquor Tun??? Math involved.

Posted 06-16-2010 at 07:25 PM by Boerderij_Kabouter
Here is the math for determining how big an element you need.

Q=m•c•(T2-T1)

Q → energy in joules (J)
m → mass in kilograms (kg)
c → heat capacity in joules per kilogram Kelvin (J/kg•K) ≈ 4184 @ 60ºC
T2 → final temp (K or ºC)
T1 → final temp (K or ºC)

m=d•V

d → density of water (kg/m^3) ≈ 983 @ 60ºC
V → volume of water (m^3)

V=...

Do I have turbulent flow in my chiller?

Posted 10-07-2009 at 07:10 PM by Boerderij_Kabouter
So this question comes up a lot so I finally took the time and crunched the numbers.

People often ask, 'how can I make my chiller more efficient?' An answer that commonly pops up is, 'add a wire to the inner diameter of the tube to increase turbulence.' I often chime in to say I am 90% sure that the flow is already turbulent, so adding a wire will do nothing.

Well, I finally ran the numbers to see what kind of liquid flow rates we need to get turbulent flow in our...

So here are some observations from a beer aficionado concerning self-proclaimed and otherwise beer snobs.

First let me state that I am not a beer snob. I love good beer and have drank more beer, more types of beer, and truly experienced more beer than 99.99% of the population. I lost count somewhere after the 2,500 mark when I left college. Needless to say, I was way into great beer before getting into homebrewing. This is one of the main reasons I find it so comical to read "My...

Boerderij Kabouter Brewery Design Series: 2010 hardplumbed system

Posted 09-01-2009 at 03:18 PM by Boerderij_Kabouter
Here is the 2010 system I have been Jonesing about for a while. It is a Brutus 20 with some tweaks. All electric, build in HERMS/Chiller, and fully hard-plumbed. I would ideally operate this with four solenoids (in green and red) with switches on the control panel (I didn't add them, sorry).

Looks pretty sweet IMO.

Here is the schematic:

Below is a typical brewday,...
