Rolling (Ugly Junk) Kegerator

Posted 06-17-2008 at 09:21 PM by BierMuncher
Well, the time has come to get off my @$$ and start building this thing. The SWMBO’s parents celebrate their 50th anniversary on August 2nd an I’m on the hook to provide the beer.

100% Irish crowd and they shall drink beer until the wee hours and then crack open the Jameson’s.

I’m going to bring over 5-gallons each of my Cream of Three Crops, an Irish Red Ale and a third TBD beer. Probably a batch of my most recent Sterling Gold or a Belgian Wit.

I already have:
A banged up 55 gallon garbage container on wheels.
3 Spare taps with 4” shanks.
Sufficient liquid and gas hose along with BL connectors.
Splitters and hose clamps.

What I need is:
A Kobalt portable CO2 unit w/ regulator from Lowe’s
Adapters to make the quick disconnect fit my gas hose.
Some 1 “ thick stiff foam board for insulation

My plan is to:
Make up a basic 2x4 frame for the bottom of the trash can to create a level floor for the kegs to sit.
Line the garbage can with 1 “ foam pieces for insulation. I’ll probably just tack it with duct tape and let the contents hold them in place.
Drill three holes in the front (towards the top) for the taps.
Drill one hole in the bottom for a drain.
Line the whole thing with a heavy duty contractors garbage bag.
Drop in the three kegs and run the lines.
Mount some sort of bracket on the inside for the CO2 unit.
Load the puppy up with ice and let her rip.

I’m hoping for a gift certificate to Lowe’s for the ole B-day to help defray some of the expense.

This isn’t something I’d plan on using more than once or twice a year…but I do have several nail guns and that portable CO2 unit could come in handy around the house.

Once I get started…I’ll maybe post pics up on the DIY site.

Here's the concept...though my garbage can is smaller than this one:

If you're going to use the CO2 unit around the house, great...

But as I recall, it was close to $100, wasn't it? Seems that you could get a 5# tank and a spare regulator for pretty much the same $$, then you'd have another "normal" spare tank around for your regular kegerator. I've committed to making the beer for some friends' wedding next year, so I'm still thinking through the dispension aspect of it - but I'm not sure what advantage the Lowe's device would have over a regular CO2 setup.
