Juice and Nottingham

Posted 04-10-2011 at 06:21 PM by beerfactory
Mixed up some Great Value brand apple juice and Nottingham. One gallon. My universal stoppers wouldn't fit in the gallon jug, so I was delayed waiting for #6 stoppers to be delivered. Everthing is put together and comfortably bubbling away.

While at Wal-Mart today, I'll pick up some more juice and start another gallon.

Nottingham

Posted 03-29-2011 at 03:16 AM by beerfactory
Ordered some Nottingham yeast today. The thought is that I'll get a simple juice and yeast mixture bubbling. Hopefully, this mix will mellow out a bit sooner than apfelwein and I'll have a something drinkable in a keg soon.

meanwhile, my latest apfelwein is bubbling along nicely...

Apfelwein Primary

Posted 03-19-2011 at 07:44 PM by beerfactory
Mixed up a batch of apfelwein on 3-12-11. After realizing I had a couple gallons in a keg, I decided it might be a good idea to fill the rest of my cornies.

Even though I mixed on 3-12, the juice must have been cold. I've had the juice in the garage for the better part of a year. Additionally, I've never fermented with this brand (Wal-Mart stopped carrying my previous brand). And...the yeast came straight out of the fridge. The bubbling fermentation activity just didn't start....

made a bit of a mess

Posted 01-13-2009 at 10:39 PM by beerfactory
Made up a batch of amber ale on Sunday. "Partially mashed" the specialty grains using a small crockpot and some cheescloth. Held the temperature right at 160 for an hour.

After this was accomplished, I started the boil. A week ago, I had made a batch using the same recipe and came in just under 5 gallons. So...I was determined to get just a bit more volume into my 3 gallon pot. After boiling for 50 minutes, I dumped the last of my extract in with an ounce of hops. ...
